Search language

As you all know, when administering Sphider you have a variety of languages which can be used on the search pages.

In the course of helping with another issue, the topic of language did arise and there is an instance when was being provided in several different languages. What seemed an obvious solution turned out to be not so obvious nor especially neat.

Soooooo.... what if the search page included a real time language choice discreetly placed up in the right hand corner? Select a language, there is an auto refresh, and the search page is re-displayed in the chosen language!

Good idea? Or leave it alone? Ideas?

Feel free to let me know what you think.

I like to think of these things from both a user and developer perspective.

As a user, of course give me more options and all the control.

As a developer, I would actually prefer to be able to have a bit more control and maybe just add the language to the ? string of the url with something like lan=es o lan=en so it is easier to update on the site front-end code. A smart user could modify the string of course, but requiring the pull from the site code instead of the DB might provide some flexibility to a coding team ( as if the team is more than me).

After my middle of the night "flash of brilliance" and resulting tests this morning, I am inclined to agree that a ? modifier to the url is the better way to go. In fact, that is EXACTLY what I did with the MOD I posted. That mod could be adapted to any Sphider version I know of going back to the Ando Saabas original. I won't speak for Sphider-Plus, but probably there as well.

Thanks for the input.
