Bad News! (and some good news, too)

It has been discovered that Sphider 1.6 (or any of the earlier versions, for that matter) will not run using PHP7.1. Fatal errors keep popping up all over the place. At first everything seems fine... but then you start using it and at some point it happens... CRASH!

Well, the good news is that PHP 7.1 isn't very common... yet. And PHP7.0 is just fine. Development of the next version of Sphider has PHP7.1 covered. There are extensive changes coming, including integrated image indexing, ability to index RSS feeds, better charset handling, improved "phrase" searches, and, of course, PHP7.1 compatibility. Much code is being rewritten to bring things closer to "PHP best practices". Testing is ongoing, but look for Sphider 2.0 within the next month or two.
